Lecture by Dr. Jan Zielonka - "EU Enlargement - Where Will Europe End Up?"
2004
In a lecture organized by the LSE Polish Society Jan Zielonka, Ralf Dahrendorf Fellow in European Politics at St. Antony's College, Oxford spoke to a mixed audience outlining the economic and political obstacles for an efficient, and enlarged, European Union. Dr Zielonka has published numerous works in the field of comparative politics (Soviet and Eastern European studies), the history of political ideas, international relations, human rights and security. Despite agreeing that EU Enlargement is the best way to safeguard the future of post-Cold War Europe, Zielonka was careful to stress the possible shortcomings and obstacles to be faced within the new, bigger European Union. Zielonka concluded his lecture by stating that although he is sceptical regarding the short-term effects of Enlargement, he believes that the "long-term benefits of enlargement for Europe as a whole will clearly exceed the costs."
