President Lech Walesa addressed the guests on the 10th of November 2005 during the celebrations of Poland's Independence Day in the Polish Embassy. The short speech was met with applause, as President Walesa gave his own view on Polish history, in particular of the 20th century. He spoke passionetely about the struggle of the Polish people to regain independence before World War I and during the communist rule. Mr Walesa underlined the importance of the late Pope John Paul II, as well as his own Solidarity Movement in the downfall of communism in Poland, as well as in the whole of Central and Eastern Europe. His speach captured the imagination of the guests, many of whom were born in Poland but had left their home country when the communist government was established after World War II. Afterwards, Mr Walesa was surrounded with people, all of whom wanted to personally thank him for all that he and Solidarity have done for Poland in the last 25 years.
Seven of the committee members were present at the Embassy, with wine and snacks being served in an easy and positive atmosphere on that important day.
