Former PM of Poland, MEP Jerzy Buzek at the LSE: "The Future of R&D and Energy Policy in the EU"
17 February 2006

MEP Buzek |
Current MEP and former PM of Poland, Jerzy Buzek visited the LSE in February 2006 to give a lecture on the future of R&D and energy policy in the EU. Dr. Karen Smith from the International Relations Department chaired the lecture. Prof. Buzek presented the key facts and policy goals for the growing divide in the level and quality of research and R&D spending between the EU and the US along with Japan, and the tough competition the EU will face in this area from China. The 'brain drain,' lack of government and, above all, private investment in R&D hamper EU economic growth and development in today's era of globalization. Prof. Buzek also focused part of his lecture on energy policy - pointing the threats coming from lack of oil and other energy sources, their movement across the EU, pollution and the challenges in securing and diversifying energy sources for the EU economy to achieve sustainable growth.
